Senior Design

A multidisciplinary capstone project focused on developing a manufacturable quartz tuning-fork thermometer for cryogenic systems.

Resonant Tuning Fork Thermometry

Our team is working to transform a laboratory-scale tuning-fork thermometer into a producible instrument for ultra-low-temperature environments and strong magnetic fields.

The project includes hermetic packaging, cryogenic integration, signal measurement, and a validation process for demonstrating unit-to-unit repeatability. My specific responsibilities are still being defined.

Heat transfer, thermodynamics, computational fluid dynamics, thermal management, and energy-system analysis.

Heat Transfer Thermal Modeling

Gas-Cooled Reactor Thermal Analysis

Modeled radial temperature distributions through a heat-generating cylindrical layer, surrounding structural materials, and a convective gas boundary. The analysis examined how heat generation, conductivity, and thermal resistance affected material temperature limits.

  • Calculated temperature profiles for multiple volumetric heat-generation rates.
  • Identified limiting operating conditions.
  • Proposed design changes to increase allowable heat generation while maintaining thermal safety.

Heat Transfer Radiation

Radiation Heat Transfer Modeling

Modeled radiative heat transfer between a campfire flame and suspended cooking pan using enclosure-radiation methods. The analysis compared several pan-surface conditions and flame-to-pan distances.

  • Solved for surface radiosities using MATLAB and nonlinear equation solving.
  • Compared uncovered, reflective, and dark-surface conditions.
  • Evaluated view-factor, emissivity, and geometry effects.

Heat Transfer Natural Convection

Natural Convection Cooling Analysis

Analyzed natural-convection cooling of beverage containers in horizontal and vertical orientations. Multiple container geometries were compared under consistent modeled conditions.

  • Calculated Grashof, Rayleigh, and Nusselt numbers.
  • Estimated average convection coefficients.
  • Compared the effect of container dimensions and orientation on predicted cooling.

Thermodynamics Energy Systems

Steam Boiler Efficiency Optimization

Analyzed a campus steam-generation system and developed a modeled waste-heat recovery concept. Combustion, heat losses, and improvement strategies were evaluated using EES.

Fluid Mechanics Aerodynamics

Airfoil Aerodynamics & Stall Simulation

Simulated two-dimensional airflow over an airfoil across angles of attack from −5° to 20°. Pressure, velocity, separation, and stall behavior were evaluated throughout the sweep.

  • Generated pressure contours and velocity vector plots.
  • Investigated flow separation and stall.
  • Compared modeled lift and drag coefficients with published experimental data.

Fluid Mechanics Thermal Management

Electronics Cooling Analysis

Used CFD to evaluate the cooling of an enclosed electronics package. The study compared inlet flow rates and working fluids to identify configurations that maintained component temperatures below critical limits.

  • Tested inlet flow rates from 1–15 CFM.
  • Compared air, helium, and R-134a.

Developed a solar-powered electromechanical attachment that automates a manual survival-water filter. The project combined mechanical design, power transmission, electronics, controls, and off-grid energy requirements.

  • Designed a motor-driven crank linkage.
  • Integrated a 12 V gear motor, solar power, electronics, and 3D-printed components.

Finite Element Analysis Structural Optimization

Double Wishbone Suspension FEA

Performed finite element analysis of a double wishbone rear suspension assembly. Simulation results were checked against mechanics-of-materials calculations before design optimization.

  • Compared fixed and spring-based shock configurations.
  • Performed mesh-convergence and factor-of-safety analysis.

Designed and manufactured a competition-ready derby car using an end-to-end CAD/CAM workflow. The project included machining, dimensional inspection, quality control, and post-processing.

PID Easy-Bake Oven

Built a closed-loop thermal-control system using a halogen heat source and Type-K thermocouple. LabVIEW regulated heater power to maintain a controlled baking temperature.

  • Implemented PID control with PWM and MOSFET switching.
  • Maintained 350°F within ±5°F.
  • Modeled heat loss and optimized insulation and duty cycle.
